What can I do to lower my triglycerides to normal levels?

Q: I have elevated cholesterol due to a high triglyceride level. According to my cardiologist, this possibly triggers my hypertension. So he prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs and although my cholesterol has almost gone down to normal, my triglycerides remain high. What can I do to lower my triglycerides to normal levels?

A: A healthy diet and regular exercise helps in maintaining both normal triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Avoidance of fat is not as important as it is with cholesterol lowering diets. Foods to avoid to lower triglycerides are those containing simple carbohydrates. In other words, stay away from refined sugars, white flour, and alcohol.
