Thalassemia and iron supplements

Q: I have Thalassemia minor. I’ve been told NOT to take Iron supplements but my doctor insists this is not true. Please advise.

A: Thalassemia minor is an inherited blood disease that effects the production of hemoglobulin. Presumably your doctor has checked your blood levels of iron and has advised you appropriately. It is perfectly okay for some people with Thalassemia minor to take an iron supplement.
