Hypothyroidism and blood pressure

Q: Is there a relationship between a low functioning thyroid and high blood pressure? And is it possible to treat a low functioning thyroid so that high blood pressure does not become an issue?

A: Hypothyroidism has been linked to high blood pressure. If other causes of high blood pressure don’t exist, it is possible that correction of low thyroid levels will result in a return to normal blood pressure levels.
