Can cough medicine effect how my blood pressure medication works?

Q: I’m on blood pressure medications, but the last three days my pressure has been high around 154/102. I had a bad sinus infection a few weeks before and the doctor prescribed a cough medication. Could this have caused my pressure to be elevated?

A: Medications used to treat colds, coughs, and flu frequently contain ingredients that can elevate blood pressure. If your pressure is still high off the medication, you should see your doctor. In the future, remind your healthcare provider that you have high blood pressure and the last prescription you received for a cough made it go even higher.
