Q: What tests are available for a patient to determine the condition of arteries in the heart and the condition of valves? I’m an 85 year old male who has a creatinine of at least 1.7 mg. I understand that tests such as an angiogram would not be appropiate with this kidney problem?
A: There are other tests available but they are not equivalent to an angiogram. It is the definitive test to determine and treat blockage of coronary arteries. As long as hydration is maintained, people with decreased renal function can undergo this procedure without problems. Typically extra fluids are given intravenously before the angiogram is even attempted.
