So glad to hear this info. Always wondered. Does it matter how long you wait before taking the next reading. My first is always much higher but I was told if you take it right away it restricts vessels (?) and you can’t count it. Also told my cardiologist about first reading difference and he said first reading was valid. (There can be a 30 pt. difference).

I live near Mayo and go there often. Now they take your pressure once. The nurse leaves so you stay calm and then it is automatically taken 5 times. The nurse returns in 15 minutes. Have also had it for 6 hours as I shopped around. Not something to look forward to as it hurts. You have to stop and keep your arm down and still. This happens every 15 minutes.

this continues to be an informative & intelligent thread. My dr always takes two readings & of course the 2d one is always lower. He agreed with me that it might be a good idea for me to get a home BP monitor so I did. Did a lot of research;p chose a digital readout, brand Life Force. Not a good thing for an obsessive person like me to have, let me tell you! I’ve had it only a week & have probably taken my BP 50 times! I see it go up when I am stressed or anxious and just for the fun of it I’ve taken it after my morning two cups of coffee or after a lunch (just to see!). I’m learning what makes it go up so in that respect the monitor is guiding me. Long story short, I have witnessed huge changes — 30 points — from morning to afternoon to night. It does a pulse reading too. Still unsure what this all means!!!

A query.

I once had my bp checked using an inflatable type in a surgery which was pumped by foot,I think, and the top reading was 200 and the device seemed to be excessively over inflated. It was then done again and came out with a more accurate reading of around 140.

I would be interested to hear other views on this including medical professionals.

An Answer to the Query, When my doc takes my BP you can barely feel the cuff. I think some docs or nurses really put the thing on too tightly. The very act of getting the cuff tightened to your arm can raise your BP.

I’m very interested in seeing this article from the Mayo Clinic newsletter. Can you tell us the title of the article and the name and issue of the newsletter? I am constantly having to tell nurses not to talk to me or weigh me before taking my blood pressure – otherwise I get a high reading and then I get anxious and then it gets even higher…
Thanks
