Using black cohosh to lower blood pressure.

Q: A friend of mine suggested black cohosh to help relieve menopause symptoms. I’ve done further investigation and see that it could also possibly have a blood pressure lowering effect. Is this true?

A: For many years, the herb Black Cohosh has been looked at as an aid for menstrual problems. More recently there is some suggestion it may help with high blood pressure. Hot flashes lessen with time so use of black cohosh typically is short term. I am not aware of any good studies showing the safety of black cohosh for long term use as would be needed for blood pressure control.
