The effect of Xanax on your blood pressure.

Q: My morning BP reading is usually up to 170. I take Atenolol 50 and Atacand 32 daily. I also take Xanax .25. The Xanax helps my BP to go lower during the morning. I have been warned to not skip or change the amount of Beta Blocker. What is the risk and does Xanax actually help my blood pressure get lower?

A: Xanax is not a treatment for high blood pressure. Xanax is used to treat anxiety. You need to tell your doctor about your high morning blood pressure. More heart attacks and strokes occur in the early morning. Your doctor may want to change how you take your blood pressure medicine to get you into better control.
