Taking supplements.

Q: I am a heart attack patient and hypertensive. I am on statins, ARB, blood thinners and anti-arrhythmia+ beta drug, Sotalol. Is it worthwhile to take supplements of Coenzyme Q10 and Omega3 acids?

A: With any drug or supplement you run the risk of side effects and interactions. The more things you take, the more likely you are to have an interaction. This is particularly true once you are on three medications. Supplements are controversial because they are not as well studied as prescription drugs. Why increase your risk of an interaction or side effect by taking an unproven supplement? Personally, I’d rather eat a handful of nuts or peanuts (actually a legume).
