Sugar and blood pressure.

Q: Sugar also elevates my blood pressure. Can you tell me why this would be?

A: There is some evidence that consuming a lot (more than 2.6 ounces or 74 grams per day) of the common sugar known as fructose will increase your risk of high blood pressure. Fructose is a common ingredient in sodas and processed foods. Look for the ingredient high fructose corn syrup. The reason why increased sugar consumption is related to high blood pressure is not yet known. For more details, go to this page at the American Society of Nephrology site.
