Statins and vitamin D

Q:  Do statins reduce vitamin D levels? I have been taking Vytorin for 2 years and suddenly my doctor asked to check vitamin D deficiency. What is going on?

A:  Recent studies suggest that one of the reasons statins may be effective in lowering heart disease is because they increase levels of vitamin D.  The studies also suggest that people on statins who get muscle aches are more likely to have low levels of vitamin D. If you are experiencing side effects, it would be reasonable for your doctor to check a Vitamin D level.  A natural source of vitamin D is sunshine.  If you always wear long clothing and sunscreen when you go outside, you may not be getting enough Vitamin D.
