One Blood Pressure Drug Tops Another In Recent Study

(RTTNews) — A new study presented at the Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension has revealed that Benicar was proven to be a more effective treatment for hypertension than Cozaar. Hypertension, more commonly known as high blood pressure, is considered a significant risk factor for heart attacks or strokes.

The study compared Benicar and Cozaar, two of the leading angiotensin II receptor blockers in common dosage. The results found that patients who received the Cozaar experienced a smaller mean blood pressure reduction of 9.7/7.1 mm Hg from a baseline of 158.3/101.3 mm Hg, compared to patients who received Benicar.

In the study, 130 overweight people who had elevated blood pressure, but weren’t taking any medications for it, were randomly assigned to take 200 milligrams per day of pine-bark extract or a placebo. The results were published in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
