Ibuprofen causing high blood pressure

Q: I have been taking hyydrochlorothiazide 25 mg. for years. About a month and half ago I tripped over the cords of Dave’s (my husband) CPAP machine and really came down hard. I had an old prescription for ibuprofel 600 mg, and started taking it 3 times a day. One week later, I tripped over some junk in the living room. A week later, I went to my doctor at the Veteran’s Administration hospital. My blood pressure was high so she put me on lisinopril 20 mg. I got a crashing headache, was exhausted and got a cough. My tongue swelled up — I’m allergic to it. I only took it once. I have an appointment to be evaluated for physical therapy next week, and have an appointment with my doctor a week after that. I think the ibuprofen is raising my blood pressure, but right now I need it.

A: It is well known that ibuprofen increases blood pressure. A safe alternative is ice. Putting an ice pack on a painful joint for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day will help decrease inflammation and pain. Just be careful place a thin towel or cloth under the ice pack to protect your skin. For a nice slushy reusable pack that will mold to your body, freeze one cup of rubbing alcohol with two cups of water in a sealable bag.
