Hypertension and pregnancy.

Q: I am 27 years old and I have hypertension. I had pre-eclampsia during my pregnancy when I was 22 years old. My daughter is now 4 and I have decided to start a weight loss program and lower my BP which is not usually high when checked. I would like to have another child in the future but I’m scared. What are the risk factors if I do become pregnant?

A: Having pre-eclampsia with your first pregnancy increases your chance of this occurring with a second pregnancy.  Your obstetrician will be better able to discuss this risk with you based on the course of your first pregnancy.  Being in the best possible physical shape prior to getting pregnant and maintaining fitness during pregnancy will help.
