Generic medication versus brand name.

Q: Is Norvasc a beta blocker? I have to take the generic version, because my insurance is not patient friendly as far as cost. I also wonder if one brand of generic Amlopodine will work as well. My pharmacist changed brands a few months ago and now my blood pressure runs higher than when I was using the first one I started with.

A: Norvasc is a brand name of the drug Amlodipine. It is in the group of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It is not a beta blocker. The generic brands of amlodipine are felt to be equivalent. You should know you have the right to appeal any decision made by your insurance company. With medical records showing your blood pressure is more difficult to keep in control on a generic drug, it is possible your insurance plan will make
an exception and allow you to take the brand name drug.
