Gaining weight from blood pressure drugs.

Q: I take 40mg of lisinopril 1xdaily,Metoprolol 50mg 2x daily and Levothyroin 175mg 1x aday. I just keep getting fatter! I have put on 60lbs this year. My bp is good now but I’ve gained all this weight. Help!

A: In addition to taking blood pressure medicine, you are on thyroid medicine. It is easy to gain weight when your thyroid gland is not in balance. If you haven’t had your thyroid function checked lately, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Make sure you are storing your thyroid medication in a dry place. This helps maintain the potency of the drug. In addition, keep in mind that use of vitamins and antacids can block the absorption of thyroid medication.
