Q: Is pomegranate juice good for lowering BP? If so what amounts should we drink?
A: Ahhh, pomegranate juice! One of the healthiest fruits that exists – it is filled with antioxidants and potassium, which are all great for your health. Given all the wonderful vitamins and minerals pomegranate offers, there is no clear evidence proving that it can lower blood pressure. Some studies prove that it is beneficial to blood pressure, while others are inconclusive. Even though it is known by many health professionals as the “heart healthy fruit”, more research is needed to conclude that it will reduce high blood pressure.
If you want to enrich your diet with a healthy fruit, then pomegranate is perfect, but do not depend on it to lower your blood pressure. But, take caution, because pomegranate juice is known to counteract or create dangerous side effects when it interacts with certain types of medicines. So, if you are taking high blood pressure medication, consult with your doctor about introducing pomegranate into your diet.
Since pomegranate juice has not been proven to lower high blood pressure, no official daily intake recommendation have been set. Enjoy, but remember it doe shave a lost of sugar and can increase your blood sugar levels if you over do it.
Other Food Solutions:
There are other foods and eating plans that have demonstrated positive effects on blood pressure levels for example: walnuts, almonds, bananas, garlic, salmon, oatmeal, tea, asparagus, blueberries. In general, foods rich in potassium, magnesium, omega-3, calcium, fiber and protein will be beneficial. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Eating Plan is an excellent way to help reduce blood pressure and it is based on research. Studies have shown that DASH and the foods it promotes can help, in many cases, to lower blood pressure. While it is rich in all the necessary nutrients, it is also low in sodium, sugar, fats and processed foods.
